Scholarship FAQs

Q: Do Capture the Dream, Inc. Scholarships require that applicants be a U.S. Citizen or have Permanent Residency?

A: Yes, both scholarships offered through Capture the Dream, Inc. require that all applicants are either U.S. Citizens OR Permanent Residents. Capture the Dream, Inc. will require proof of the applicant's status IF he/she is selected as a finalist.

Q: What does it mean for the application to be "post-marked" by July 15, 2012?

A: A postmark is a postal marking made on a letter, package, postcard, or the like indicating the date and time the that the item was delivered into the care of the postal service. This means that an applicant must have all application materials submitted to the postal carrier on or before July 15, 2012.

Q: Is it possible to apply for both scholarships? Will applying for both have any kind of negative impact on being awarded either?

A: Yes, applicants may apply for both scholarships. However, Capture the Dream, Inc. will not award both scholarships to the same applicant. Applying for both does not increase or decrease chances of being awarded either scholarship; however, an applicant planning to apply for both must submit two separate applications in addition to submitting two separate letters of recommendation, which may be written by the same person, and two separate essays, each tailored to the specific requirements of each scholarship.

Q: Does Capture the Dream, Inc. offer any scholarships for graduate students?

A: Capture the Dream, Inc.'s Single Parent Scholarship is currently only open to students enrolled in an accredited 2 or 4-year institution. Capture the Dream, Inc.'s Minorities in Leadership Scholarship is currently only open to graduating high school seniors AND undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited 4-year institution. Capture the Dream, Inc.'s Minorities in Leadership scholarship is currently NOT open to students enrolled at 2 year institutions; however, new scholarships may be launched in the future that will be open to anyone enrolled in an accredited institution, graduate school, etc. By subscribing to the Capture the Dream, Inc. Newsletter (www.capturethedream.org), applicants can be sure to be kept up to date with any new scholarship opportunities and other relevant information that may be of use in their academic endeavors.

Q: Can my recommender mail my letter of recommendation directly to Capture the Dream, Inc.?

A: No. Capture the Dream, Inc. requires applicants to include ALL required materials for each application in a single application package. This enables our staff to keep better track of incoming applications, and eliminates the risk that individual pieces of your application materials may be mixed up or lost.

Q: Does the letter of recommendation have to be in a sealed and signed envelope by the recommender?

A: Yes. The application instructions clearly state that letters of recommendation must be sealed and signed by the recommender. Applicants should plan ahead to ensure that letter(s) of recommendation are received in time to meet the application deadline.

Q: Is the "Career Interests" section of the application an essay? How long should it be?

A: Yes. This section should be written as a short essay. This section should not be too long, because applicants will be asked to touch upon career interests again (and in more depth) in the 1,000-word application essay. There is no strict limit for the length of the Career Interests response, but applicants should use the amount of space provided to get a better idea of how long the essay should be.

Q: What is the Financial Aid Web-Award Confirmation?

A: Once you log in to your respective university's website there should be a way to navigate to your personal financial-aid information. From there, you should be able to view and print your Financial-Aid Award Confirmation for the upcoming term. This page should include information such as (but not limited to): total cost of tuition, expected parent contribution, expected student contribution, grants, student loans, work-study, etc.

Q: What should be included in the Introduction Letter to the Scholarship Committee?

A: The introduction letter is a separate letter of introduction, very similar to a cover letter. It should be somewhat more detailed than the information applicants provide throughout the application and include any information that an applicant either believes should be emphasized further, or believes has not been covered in the application but is nonetheless important and relevant. The letter is a summary of an applicant's qualifications, which should illustrate to the Scholarship Committee why he/she would be a strong candidate for this particular scholarship.
