- Who are the Adopt-a-Family recipients?
We partner with several Bay Area non-profit organizations and local programs that work primarily with low-income families. We work with these organizations to select participating families. Capture the Dream, Inc. reviews each family carefully to ensure that they are truly in need of assistance for the holidays, and would benefit from participation in the Adopt-a-Family program.
- What are the criteria for recipient selection?
All of the families who participate in our program are:
b. Bay Area residents
c. referred by a non-profit organization or social worker
- How much does it cost to sign-up to adopt a family?
Capture the Dream, Inc. collects a $25 adoption donation per family adopted. E.g. 2 families adopted x $25/family = $50. This donation can be made through our website when you sign up.
- How much money should I expect to spend on gifts?
You can generally expect to spend a minimum of $100 to adopt one small family, or approximately $50-100 per individual in your adopted family.
- Can I choose what size family to adopt?
We will pair you with a family based on the family size preference indicated when you sign up.
- When will I get the wish list from my adopted family?
We will try to get information about your adopted family to you within 5 business days of when we receive confirmation of your successful online sign up.
- Should I wrap the gifts?
Please bring only UNWRAPPED gifts. Unwrapped gifts help us ensure that gifts are delivered to the correct members of their assigned families, and that all items are age appropriate and safe. Do include gift-wrapping materials along with your gifts: wrapping paper, gift boxes, gift bags, tissue paper, tape and bows.
You are welcome to help wrap the gifts once they’ve been inspected and checked in by one of our staff members. If you’re unable to stay to help wrap, our holiday elves will wrap the gifts for your adopted family.
- Can I donate used items?
Gently used items may be donated, but generally will not be counted toward fulfillment of the “1 need, 1 want” gift giving requirement. Donations should be packaged separately, and will be given to the adopted family unwrapped. Exceptions may be made for larger items such as furniture and consumer electronics. Please email the program manager to ask about specific items.
- Can I donate food?
Please do not give food unless it is specified on your family’s wish list. We do not keep records of each family’s dietary preferences or restrictions, and are thus unable to ensure that the food is suitable for the family. Please consider donating a grocery gift card instead.
- Where and when is the gift delivery held?
Gift delivery will happen at the facilities of our community partners. Gift delivery dates, locations and other details will be emailed to all registered Adopters.
- Can I be there when my adopted family receives their gifts?
Yes! We highly encourage Adopters to be present for gift presentations. Please let us know if you plan to participate in the presentation, and we will share the presentation schedule with you.
- Can we present our family with their gifts at a venue/date of our choice?
For the safety and convenience of all participants, we cannot allow gifts to be given outside of our hosted gift presentation event. If you’d like to participate in the gift presentations, you must be available during your family’s scheduled gift presentation appointment.
- Is my gift donation tax deductible?
Your donated gifts may be tax deductible. A donation receipt will be issued if you provide Capture the Dream, Inc. with the sales receipts for proof of purchase. Please note that sales tax is not tax deductible and the amount of sales tax paid will not be included in your donation receipt.
- Out-of-state but want to adopt a family?
Capture the Dream, Inc.’s Adopt A Family program facilitates meaningful relationships between adopters and needy families within the San Francisco Bay Area. We’re currently unable to accommodate adopters from out of state. If you would like to support our program please consider making a monetary contribution.
- How can my family be adopted?
In order to be adopted, you or a member of your family must either 1.) be a current Capture the Dream, Inc. client enrolled in our Dreamcatcher program, or 2.) be referred by one of our selected partner organizations.
- Capture the Dream, Inc. clients must be have been enrolled in Dreamcatcher for a minimum of 6 months and referred by the Dreamcatcher program manager. If you would like to know more about how you can enroll your child in Dreamcatcher, please visit our Dreamcatcher program page.
- Each year, Capture the Dream, Inc. solicits organizations serving low-income and under-served communities to submit applications to partner with us in delivering our Adopt A Family program for the year. Clients referred by our selected partner(s) will be eligible to participate in Adopt A Family for the program season.
- Can I ask for gift cards?
Please try to ask for specific items as much as possible, as many of our adopters appreciate the opportunity to make thoughtful purchases that they can imagine your family using and enjoying. We ask that you limit requests for gift cards to no more than 25% of your list. For example, on a list of 15 items (10 need + 5 wants), no more than 3 should be gift cards.
- Can I ask for food?
If you would like to request food or food gift baskets, please be as specific as possible, and be sure to let us know if you have any restrictions that the adopters should be aware of. Please keep in mind that our staff and the adopters we work with will not be familiar with any dietary restrictions or food allergies you and your family may have unless you tell us.
- What if my family really needs some things that cost more than the program limit?
Our guidance of asking for no more than (2) items per person costing more than $50 per item is intended to give adopters of various income levels the opportunity to contribute to this program. If there is an expensive item that your family really needs, please list this as your “Dream” item. We make no promises or guarantees that all dreams will be fulfilled, but there is always a chance that this holiday season someone will be able to make your family’s dream come true.
- What if I’m okay with some things being used, but not everything?
Please indicate on the family information sheet that you are comfortable receiving gently used items. In order to be considered a gift, most items are required to be new, but adopters will also have the option of giving lightly used items as a donation to your family.
- What is the difference between the Needs and the Wants?
Needs are generally things that are considered essential – e.g. clothing, furniture, household items, transportation assistance, food assistance, and educational tools. Items such as video games, sporting goods and recreation items, and entertainment are not considered to be essential, and would be considered a Want. Our intent is not to discourage participants from asking for any of these items, however, we do encourage you to be thoughtful about your requests.
- What if I can’t think of enough things to completely fill out the wish list?
We have provided you with a supplemental list of suggested items that you can consider including on your wish list. This supplemental list is also provided to the adopters. If you do not have a complete list, the adopters may try to select an item for you from this list. By adding these items to your list yourself, it removes some of the guesswork for the adopters, and increases the likelihood that you receive gifts that better suit your needs and interests.
- What happens if my list doesn’t meet all the requirements?
At our discretion, we may send the list back to you with a request that you update your wish list to comply with the requirements. This delay may result in our program being unable to match you with an adopter, and you may not be able to participate in the program.
- I have a large family. Do I really need to fill out separate waivers for each family member?
Each adult participant must sign a separate liability waiver and multimedia waiver. All minors under the care of the same parent/guardian may be included on a single liability waiver by adding their names to the “Participant’s Name” section on the Waiver of Liability Agreement – Minor Participant form. Minors are also included in the Multimedia Waiver signed by their parent/guardian, and separate forms are not required.
- Do I have to sign both waivers to participate in the program?
All participants must agree to all parts of the liability waiver in order to participate in the program. Participants are not required to agree to Capture the Dream, Inc.’s use of the participants’ likeness in any media or promotional materials. If your family may not be photographed/recorded, please write that on the Multimedia Waiver. You do not need to sign the form
** Please note that even if you elect not to sign the Multimedia Waiver, our staff photographers/videographers may still photograph or record you while you are at the gift presentation activities. Following the event, Capture the Dream, Inc. will work with your participating agency’s administrators to identify each individual in the photographs/recordings taken during the event, and we will then remove all likenesses of individuals who have requested not to be photographed/recorded.
