WARRIORS READ TO ACHIEVE BASKETBALL GAMEBy Athalia Nakula
Oakland, Calif. - Capture the Dream, Inc. gave out 25 tickets to children, parents, and volunteers from single-parent homes to watch the Warriors vs. Sonics game and to participate in The Warriors Reading Time Out on January 6, 2007, at the Oracle Arena. "We chose single-parent, low-income families," said Janine Lee, CEO of Capture the Dream, Inc., "because we wanted to benefit children that had parents [who] could not afford the sports game themselves and had parents that might need extra help with supervision [of their children]." At the event, the children watched the game and The Warrior Girls and The Warrior mascot, Thunder, read books to around 50 children ages 13 and under in attendance. All of the attending children received Read to Achieve T-shirts, books, stickers, and other goodies. The Reading Time Out's purpose was to promote the importance of reading and literacy. Besides dispersing tickets, Capture the Dream, Inc. volunteers monitored and kept the children company during the game, directed the children to the Read to Achieve half-time, and brought the children back to their parents after the half-time was over. "The volunteers had fun interacting with the kids," said Lee, "[We asked the children] who their favorite basketball players were, if they play sports themselves, and if this was their first game." Parents were thankful for the incredible experience. A single mother Sherry Spitzer said she was surprised that they were given the opportunity to get free tickets to the game. Her children had never been to a basketball game because of their economic condition. Picture from http://www.nba.com/warriors/community/read_to_achieve.html |
