TIE-DYE FUN WITH SHRINER'S HOSPITAL CHILDRENBy Athalia Nakula
"The purpose of the trip," said Janine Lee, CEO of Capture the Dream, Inc., "was to encourage communication and build interpersonal skills through a caring support group." In a hospital's contained outdoor facility, the children dipped plain white T-shirts with rubber bands on them into different water-colored bins to create various patterns. The team walked the children through the process. "The children loved their shirts," said Lee, [They] were excited to do something new and were happy to interact with us. "The parents present were also very thankful." Although Capture the Dream, Inc. crew are most likely not able to visit the children this year, Lee planned to delegate the responsibility. Lee said, "I hope to reach out to UC Davis students to coordinate and make a trip [to the hospital] every year and to [rally] volunteers here in the Bay Area to do the same." |

Sacramento, Calif. - Capture the Dream, Inc. crew, a group of volunteers, and some UC Davis students organized a tie-dye activity for around 20 children at Shriner's Hospital Critical Care unit on Tuesday, August 29, 2006. The children were mostly severe burn victims who had suffered trauma. According to National SAFE KIDS Campaign, around 83,300 children ages 14 and under were treated for burn injuries in hospital emergency rooms in 2003.
