PERALTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BOOK DRIVEBy Athalia Nakula
Oakland, Calif. - Capture the Dream, Inc. collected around 1,000 books after hosting a 12-day book drive from April 2 to April 14, 2007, for a fire-damaged Peralta Elementary School. The fire on Monday, March 26, 2007, left the school library's books smoke damaged with a minimal number of books salvaged. "The fire was a devastating situation that occurred," said Janine Lee, CEO of Capture the Dream, Inc., "and as a leader of a community organization, I felt compelled to arrange an outreach program to assist them in this time of need." Capture the Dream, Inc. posted book drive announcements on its website and other public websites to have books dropped off at local, Oakland bookstores. Capture the Dream, Inc. crews also placed book drive posters outside bookstores. At Barnes and Nobles - Jack London Square, a percentage of proceeds were donated when customers purchased books under the name of Capture the Dream, Inc. and Peralta Elementary. The books donated were mainly elementary-level books, children storybooks, and some workbooks from various libraries, teachers, and bookstore owners in the area. Laurel Bookstore brought in at least half of the total number of books. "The school was very thankful," said Lee, they sent out thank you notes to our volunteers and and their librarian e-mailed us words of thanks for the books we donated. |
